Who is Juvederm indicated for?
Juvederm injectable gel temporarily adds volume to facial tissue and restores a smoother appearance to the face. Juvederm therapy is indicated for the correction of facial wrinkles and folds, such as nasolabial folds (the creases running from the bottom of your nose to the corners of your mouth,) enhancement of the cheek bones as well as lip augmentation.
Juvederm injectable gel is available in two formulations to allow Dr. Jain to tailor treatment to your unique needs. Juvederm Ultra provides versatility in contouring and volumizing facial wrinkles and folds. Juvederm Ultra Plus is a more robust formulation for volumizing and correcting deeper folds and wrinkles.
What makes Juvederm different from other dermal fillers?
Juvederm injectable gel employs its unique manufacturing process to provide the high concentration of cross-linked hyaluronic acid enhancing its ability to provide long-lasting results. This advanced manufacturing process works to create a smooth consistency gel that flows easily into the skin and provides a smooth, natural look and feel. Juvederm is likely to produce less swelling in the areas treated, and achieve less “lumpy” appearance than some other fillers can leave.

What is hyaluronic acid?
Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a naturally occurring component of all connective tissues as well as skin. Because of its uniform structure throughout all living species, it rarely provokes adverse immune response. HA attracts and holds on to water molecules helping to hydrate and add volume to your skin. In addition to its use as an aesthetic treatment, hyaluronic acid has also been used for more than 20 years for injection into arthritic joints to aid movement as well as for eye surgeries and wound repair.
There are several families of popular HA injectables including Restylane line (Non-animal source derived: Restylane Fine Lines, Restylane, Perlane, Restylane SubQ,) Hylaform line (Animal source derived: Hylaform Fine Line, Hylaform Plus) and, more recently, Juvederm line (Non-animal source derived: Juvederm Ultra, Juvederm Ultra Plus) and Teosyal line (Non-animal source derived: Teosyal Kiss and Teosyal Ultra Deep). Although all products contain essentially the same HA molecule, the differences between the products relate to the quantity/concentration of HA present, the degree of cross-linking, the amount of proteins present, their flow characteristics and the target placement within the dermal-subcutaneous continuum. Juvederm is unique because of the high level of crosslinking which allows it to have smooth consistency instead of the granular consistency of Restylane. Crosslinking also reduces the rate of degradation after injection. Since Juvederm is not derived from an animal source, and hyaluronic acid is a natural component of our skin, there is no significant risk of allergic reaction to the product.
The versatility of HA products is really helpful in selecting a specific product for each unique application (dermal, sub-dermal, subcutaneous or supra-periosteal injections.) This versatility, combined with the low risk of immune reactions, makes HA products the cornerstone of injectable fillers.
How is Juvederm treatment performed?
Once all your questions are answered, Dr. Jain or a registered nurse will inject Juvederm into the skin using a fine needle to temporarily fill in and augment the treatment area and smooth facial wrinkles and folds such as nasolabial folds (the lines running from the corner of the mouth to the sides of the nose,) marionette lines (the lines running from the corner of the mouth to the chin). Juvederm is also a great filler for augmentation of cheek bones as well as lips. Juvederm temporarily adds volume to the skin and may give the appearance of a smoother surface.
Injections may cause some discomfort during and after the treatment. The smooth consistency gel of Juvederm allows us to administer it easily and smoothly. Juvederm is injected directly into the skin using a fine needle to reduce injection discomfort. We may choose to numb (anesthetize) the treatment area to further minimize discomfort.

Does the correction last forever?
No, but the correction lasts for 6-12 months or longer. Touch-up injections as well as repeat injections are usually needed every 4-6 months to maintain optimal corrections. The individual results can vary as each of our metabolism is different and we can metabolize injected product in different ways.
Does it hurt?
Most people find the injections relatively painless. They may prick a little. If you like, a topical anesthetic can be applied to the area being treated prior to your procedure. When enhancing the lips, a local anesthetic injection is often given.
How soon will I see the results?
The results will be seen immediately, although the full effect will be visible only after a few days. In the fist 2-3 days there may be some swelling, redness, and lumpy appearance, which slowly fades away.
What will I look like after the treatment?
Immediately after the treatment, you can expect slight redness, swelling, tenderness or an itching sensation in the treated area. This is a normal result of the injection. The discomfort is temporary and generally disappears in a few days. After a lip treatment, the lips may become swollen and look somewhat uneven. This can persist for a few days (up to a week). If the discomfort continues, please contact your physician.
What should I bear in mind after my treatment with Juvederm?
During the first 48 hours after your treatment, do not massage or rub the treated area. If you have had a lip enhancement, avoid puckering your lips for the first two days after the treatment. Until the initial swelling and redness have resolved, do not expose the treated area to intense heat (e.g. in a solarium or by sunbathing) or extreme cold.
Can Juvederm be removed?
No. However, Juvederm dissolves naturally with time. If you feel uncertain about the desired result, you can choose to have the treatment done in steps on different occasions.
Will it Disturb my Body's Natural Balance?
No. Because of Juvederm’s careful design, it works with your body, not against it. The filler is injected into the tissue and allows for passage of oxygen and hormones. Because of this ability for free passage through the gel, the skin stays healthy, for the entire time that Juvederm is present.
What are the possible side effects of Juvederm?
Most side effects are mild or moderate in nature, and their duration is short lasting (7 days or less). The most common side effects include, but are not limited to, temporary injections site reactions such as: redness, pain/tenderness, firmness, swelling, lumps/bumps, bruising, itching, and discoloration. As with all skin injection procedures there is a risk of infection.
Report any side effects to Dr. Jain and his team as soon as they become evident.
